Orientation has been a whirlwind and it still isn’t over. To keep you completely up-to-date and make the next post to the point, I have a homework assignment for you: watch Gary Haugen’s TED Talk. If 20 minutes sounds too overwhelming to sit down for, listen while you drive or quickly read the transcript. Gary is the founder and CEO of IJM and here he shares his story and outlines the reason we approach injustice the way we do (I get to say “we” now!). My respect for this man has increased as I’ve been able to work with him and I only have one critique of this talk: the use of “poor people” over “people experiencing poverty.” I try really hard to use people-first language, but I’ll cut him some slack since it’s from 2015 and I haven’t heard him use “poor people” at all in person.
What do YOU care about?
I’ve really appreciated how transparent and thorough orientation has been, but I know that my passion for IJM is (probably) much deeper than yours. What are the things that you are confused about that I can make sure to touch on in posts going forward?
